Raccoons are a intelligent and strong animal. A Raccoon can easily grip a gutter down spout to climb to your roof and and will typically gain access into the house either through the dormer soffit or down the chimney. A study has shown that if a female Raccoon was born in a chimney then she is more then likely to give birth in a chimney. That is why it is important to install and animal proof chimney cap, not only will it keep the raccoons out it will also prevent chimney swifts from entering and building their nest along the walls of the flue.
If you suspect a raccoon is living in your attic, never seal off any openings. By doing so you may separate the female from her young and she will make a bigger hole to gain access back into the house.
At certain times of the year a Raccoon can also be responsible for extensive turf damage. A Raccoon is literally grubbing for food and they will roll the sod over to gain access to the moist topsoil were the grubs reside.
